On July 22, Queensland Government closed the state's borders. With many competitors unable to make the race, we have made the hard decision to postpone the Australian Open until later this year.
The date and location of the ultimate Australian electric skateboard race is defined. Test your skills against your mates and other riders from across the country at the 2021 Australian Open, at Redlands BMX Track in QLD. On Saturday, 24th July, we will have a full day of open track practice, multiple heats and race finals, followed by an afterparty. On Sunday, it will be a recovery group ride & eSkate hangouts in Brisbane City. It's the first time in 2021 that Evolve organises an Australian electric skateboard race, and it's going to be epic!
The Evolve Australian Open 2021 will be for All-terrain boards, including DYI boards and other brands. The track and race format will be friendly for all skill abilities with different categories.
"No electric skateboard races are happening anywhere globally, and we want to make it inclusive so everybody can have a good time. It's going to be competitive for some people, but I just want everyone to have a crack. Rock up to the event, have fun, get around the track and enjoy yourself." - Jeff, founder of Evolve Skateboards.
The ultimate Australian electric skateboard race: Categories
In this edition, all boards are welcome. As we all know, each board has different specs, so we have to work out a level of fair playing field, that's why we created an open category based on specs.
- Evolve (stock Evolve boards only)
- Open (All voltages, motor sizes, and 4x4 builds will be allowed to compete + half bindings only)
- Crew VS Crew (which is Australia's fastest eSkate group?)
In the Crew VS Crew category, there is the possibility of having a state-verse-state race. We will wait until tickets are sold and see who's coming from where. If we have enough riders from different states, why not! If you want to receive the latest updates of the event, sign up for our newsletter.
The ultimate Australian electric skateboard race: Location
Finding the right place to do these events is a big challenge as it's a fairly new sport, but our team found a rad location for this race. It's a BMX track in Redlands.
It's a pretty cool track, and it's going to be challenging, but not like the ones used at the Evolve World Cup in the USA (Chula Vista) and at the UK (Olympic Park). There are tabletops and quality booms - the track surface is really clean and safe.
"This track will test people's skills, but at the same time, if you're not the world's best electric skateboarder, you're still going to get around the track and have a good time." - Jeff, founder of Evolve Skateboards.
The ultimate Australian electric skateboard race: How did it start?
The first Australian Open was in 2018 on the Gold Coast. We teamed up with Extreme Karting, so it was a go-kart track. We had to modify the track in three days, we were landscaping and trying to build all the booms ourselves. It was a challenging task, but we came up with a pretty good track.
It was an Evolve event only, and at the time, our product on the market was the GT Series. So, it started there, and the big drawcard was whoever won the event would win a brand-new custom board and would get a free ticket to the USA to participate and represent Australia in the Evolve Riders World Cup, which was held a few months later.
It was a great event! It was the first time we'd done something like this and we tried to make it competitive. For our first event, we had a pretty good turnout with a total of 40 riders.
